WordPress Plugin to Change Website Link Names

Share

I was recently trying to put together a website using wordpress and wanted to be able to change the link names using wp_list_pages. I hadn’t realised before that you can’t have a different page heading to your link name, so for example if on my front page I wanted the title to be ‘Welcome to my website” the link in my navigation using wp_list_pages would also say “welcome to my website” when I really just wanted it to say home. I knew I could just hand code it but I wanted my client to be able to easily add pages without messing about, so I searched for a plugin.

After a big search I still hadn’t found one and had little response from the WordPress forum so I tried the forum over at blogging tips where help was much more forthcoming. Sarah from Stuff by Sarah kindly created a plugin called Page Menu Editor which did exactly what I needed and I am sure will be useful to many people. Sarah’s website also has a lot of other plugins and advice which are well worth a look.

I like WP but I’m concerned about their security. They seem to have a new patch constantly. For instance, this comment: “A few weeks ago, we noticed that someone had managed to insert a bunch of spam links into our WordPress header and footer. We quickly updated to the latest version (2.3.3 at the time), thinking it would fix the security hole. However, this happened again, and seems to be happening on WordPress blogs all across the Internet.” You have another entry about a WP blog being a CM system and this is why we hesitate to use their platform. Any thoughts?

I too love WordPress. I think that WordPress is a really innovative platform, allowing bloggers, designers, artists etc to communicate to wider audiences, much easier than previously. It’ll all get much more innovative and advanced I’m sure.

BTW, great blog, and inspiring ideas. Thanks :)

A very timely post – for me.
I just started using WordPress a week ago, after being a long time Joomla user, and I am quite pleased with it; but there are some little irritations alon the lines of what you describe here. Fortunately, there is a very active plugin community – which is partly what finally decided it for me.
What I am trying to find just now is a plugin or other hack whereby I can display different sidebars for each category – instead of being stuck with the same sidebar for each post – anyone have any suggestions?

That’s part of the beauty of WordPress–you want a way to fix something and someone can code it, lickety-split. Gotta love the flexibility.

The above notes re: security are troublesome, though.

    My blog uses wordpress.

On one hand wordpress is extremely powerful and it takes a lot less time to create and run than a static link site, but it has some limitations also, like how each post is limited by the theme css.

    It covers everything

I’ve just wondering if someone also know how to have more than 1 site map in wordpress because I want to separate my post into different site map for 100 post on each site map. I’m looking forward, someone can give me a suggestion, especially from you Tara. Many Thanks.
