First I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. I love the Christmas break, but it’s so hard to get back into work again.
We all make New Years resolutions each year – eat healthier get fit etc etc, but what about your design and business resolutions, do you have any?
My New Year Design Resolutions are:
1. To finally sort out my new logo and web site
I started them about a month ago but must get them done. It’s is so difficult designing for yourself, especially when you have live paid work.
2. To improve my web design skills
This is something I have really been trying to do. I have very basic HTML and CSS skills but need to put them in practice more and hopefully take on my first live web design project when I feel more confident. Hopefully the online course I start later this month will help.
3. Build up some more design work
It’s always nice to gain new clients, and of course new types of work gives your work a lift and freshness (or hopefully do)
4. Get one of my character or toy ideas taken up by a company
Something I have wanted for a long time is to get one of my character designs, toy ideas, other ideas taken up by a company and this is something I am going to try and push this year.
What are your New Year Design Resolutions?

Hi Tara,
I’m looking forward to seeing your new logo and website! Will there be much of a change from your current blog design?
My new years resolution is to keep a firm hold on my domain names. We’ll see how I get on.
Hi David
I am keeping graphic design blog as it is but also setting up a new domain/look as my personal design site and blog. The new blog will be targeted more at potential clients rather than other designers.
Congratulations on getting your domain back by the way, it just shows the power of bloggers that eventually got you a contact high up in Go Daddy and got it all sorted out.
Thanks. You helped me out by spreading the news, which was very much appreciated.
Hi! I find your blog very interesting. I hope it will be the same next year and even better
My New Year Design Resolutions are very similar to yours.
I must work on my web design skills, I hope I’ll finish my web projects, and I wish to have more design work and more satisfied clients.
Designing for yourself, oh I know that one! I’m scared to start on my blog redesign because I don’t think I’ll be satisfied with it. But I promised myself that after having my blog up for 6 months (to see if I could really do this) I would create my own template. Well, it’s been 5 months now and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon, so it’s time to get moving.
I hope you’ll be soon reporting to us about your successes with the Weather Pops!
I resolve to not make any new years resolutions because I always break them. Er, oops. See??!
Resolution:
I’m going to try to meet with a few clients this year. I work with clients all over the country and it’s always by phone and e-mail. That works fine. But without a face-to-face, personal relationship, it’s a lot harder to connect with clients.
Happy New Year everyone,
Design (high) resolutions – no one else has pointed out the pun, so I hope you’ll pardon it now!
Redesigning my website is a major one which should have happened months ago but some serious family illness meant it got put on the backburner.
My animation work wraps up at the end of January and after that I expect I’ll be embarking on freelance design work so getting that up and running will be the biggest task.
I aim to also make the time to concentrate on some personal art projects this year.
One of these weeks I’ll also update my thumbnail picture for blogging comments!
Good luck with all your plans, Tara.
Designing for yourself is the most painful part of being a designer
Hope you’ll announce your new blog for clients here, it’s always interesting to see how other designers approach the business side of things.
I wrote about my goals on InspirationBit, re-design of my blog is one of them.
Designing for yourself – I don’t envy you, everything I design for myself is pretty lame no matter how hard I try!
I think sometimes we should actually consider hiring another designer to do it for us instead, they’d probably do a better job of it.
This year my aim is to learn a lot more about blog promotion and gain alot of subscribers, I’m still pretty new to blogging and the longer I do it, the more I find there is to learn.
Happy New Year to all!
My new years resolutions are simple ;
TO BE RICH BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS!
In lieu of that, I want to complete a project I’ve been working on to provide online training in Photoshop and maybe Flash.
I’d also like to get more clients for my web design work.
Hi NiNNa thanks and good luck with your resolutions
Hi Lauren – that’s what New Years resolutions are made for – breaking
Hi Dean – Sounds like the New Year means you’ll be doing a lot of travelling, enjoy.
Hi Vivien, I am off to check out your goals in a min.
Hi Amanda, Learning more about blog promotion is a good one.
Hi Jennifer – I’m with you there
Let me know when you have got your online training set up and I’ll give it a mention.
Hey! Firstly Thanx! I find your blog really interesting and a nice place to find inspiration. Hope it continues in the new year.
My New Year Design Resolutions are pretty simple really..
1/ I must ditch my useless boss and start out on my own.
2/ I must create a kickass logo, website and keep it fresh.
3/ I must stop drinking so much coffee, working so late for peanuts and go for a walk once in a while.
Thanks for listening.
I’m a regular reader of your blog, so I thought I’d finally contribute, and just to say thanks for providing such a useful site for a design student like myself.
I’ve already made a list of my new years resolutions, so I’ll share a couple with you
- Read more books (I mean story books, I already read so many design books, but I find that I can get so much inspiration from great pieces of literature, not just for my design work but for my concepts generating and thought process too.)
- Improve my handwriting (I produce far too much developmental work on the Mac, which is beginning to look a little antiseptic since I realised that I have the scrawlings of an infant. Improving my handwriting will produce some much nicer human looking sheets)
- (The big one) Finish my course with Triple Distinction grade, I’m pretty close, I can get away with pretty mediocre grades from now on and still get that grade, but It would be nice to secure it before too long
Thanks for reading
Take Care
Dan
HI Annimoose – Thanks for your comment – good luck with starting out on your own
Hi Dan
Many thanks I’m glad you like reading, any suggestions for posts you have would be most welcome. Thanks for sharing your resolutions and Good luck with your triple distinction.
I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
2007 was an exciting and interesting year for me. While I moved to Germany at the end of 2006, 2007 was the real beginning of our new life in Europe.
2007 was also a busy year: I visted about 30 Biergartens, started this blog, attended Oktoberfest, went to my first Adobe Max conference, went sailing at the Lake of Garda, and went Skiing in the Alps! And not to forget the many biking and hiking trips in Germany, Austria and Italy.
If last year is any indication of what 2008 will be it will be another great year!
I have 3 main design-related goals for this year:
1) Do more sales/marketing activities
2) Try 2 new design styles – maybe on redesigning some older sites
3) Design a flash site
1. Build Links
2. Move Up on Google
3 Make Money
