I have my Stumbleupon characteristics set to design and every now and again when I am bored or looking for some interesting design I may never have come across other wise I press the Stumbledupon button and see where it takes me. It was in this way I stumbled on the posters of John Solimine at Spike Press Take a look at his posters. I love they way they have a kind of naive print type retro feel to many of them, with the rough textured look of a print roller, but combined with more modern graphics too. The graphics are just beautifully simple but incredibly effective. You can see even more of his posters at Gig Posters too.

Great finds, stumble upon is definitely a great resource for finding new things… I unfortunately always forget to use it!
I agree about the retro colors. Used to be I didn’t like those kinds of color schemes. Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older, but they appeal to me much more lately. I love the girl pulling on her bubble gum as if she doesn’t have a care in the world.
I love the use of unordinary fonts. Alot of people just go with the “save” fonts which sometimes let’s the rest of the poster down. I make that mistake too from time to time.
Looks like he’s a fan of Saul Bass’s typography (Bass did a lot of work with Hitchcock). I do like Solimine’s style. It’s unique, visually appealing and it’s fascinating how he has a consistent approach to design, yet his work isn’t monotonous. Many artists and designers with a “style” become boring because once you’ve seen one thing, it seems you’ve seen it all. I think the cohesive look is due in part to similar color schemes, style elements and textures throughout his different works. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Joel, Charity, Thanks for your comments I’m glad you both like them.
Hi Thomas, I know what you mean about the fonts, its so hard and takes so long to try and find the right font for a job.
Hi Lauren, I will have to check out Saul Bass, thanks
nice site and some good reads
Hi Tara,
Nice poster finds. I always liked this kind of illustration when I was a kid and I still find it attractive now. he images of the pirate and the girl in particular remind me of some of the illustrations in the Childcraft books we used to have at home (anyone else have them?) when I was small.
Cool designes. I like the 1st one.
