Mojizu Contemporary Character Design Community

Mojizu

I found the site http://www.mojizu.com a few weeks ago and thought it was quite a unique idea I hadn’t seen before. The site allows users to upload their own character designs, which can then be voted on by the character design community and prizes are available for winners. Other features include the Mojizu war where two character designs are put head to head and a winner is again voted by users.

There are real mixed bag of characters from the most basic amateur attempts to slicker professional looking character designs. What Mojizu has done, which I think is a really clever idea is created a shop where the top characters can be purchased on limited edition merchandise, a percentage is given to the artist and I would imagine this could be a real money spinner for Mojizu who benefit from not only the character licensing but also the print margin. Mojizu top characters are also available as mobile phone characters

So did you post your characters for review? If so, what did the community say?? I tried to search for them, but the search function on that website is crummy. I think your Weather Pops are much cuter than a lot of the stuff I saw on there! Any word from publishers yet?

Hi Lauren, I thought about it, but am still dreaming of a big TV or publishing deal ;) . I have been thinking about trying to approach shops too by drawing up some visuals with the characters on products, but as will everything haven’t got round to it. I need to focus, but you know what its like – you want to spend time on your work, blog, learning CSS, family, and I have another idea I am working on too. I am not too good at just focusing on one thing, its probably my downfall.

Oh, I don’t think I know any designer capable of focusing on just one thing at a time! We have too many creative ideas that we must see come to fruition! :)

    Hi Tara,

cool website you’ve found! I have to agree with LaurenMarie, I tend to do the same, can’t focus on one thing, normally I’m busy working on at least three different projects at the same time. At times for fun, at times for study… I think that’s exactly what makes you a creative person…

I haven’t spoken to my friend yet, she had to go to India in a rush but I didn’t forget about asking her… and I will!

You and Lauren ar making me feel better, I thought it was just me :)

Thanks for remembering about asking your friend, that would be great when you get chance.

I came across that site recently too. Due to some issues with being competitive I had to toss a couple of ideas into the mix. One of them actually made it to the war, even I’m still not clear on exactly what the end goal is.

I’m going to wander around your site now and see if I can find your characters that the original commenter remarked about.

I’m really liking your site, by the way.

    Hi Tara,

I’ve only got two out there now, and like I said earlier, they were just for fun.
    Legosaurus
    JoeDrinkers Mojis

The Legosaurus is the one in the war. Spresso was more just as a personal project.

    Hi Joe

Legosaurus looks cool, have you done anything with him since? I keep meaning to have a dabble with 2D animation (so many things I want to try). There is a program called Anime Studio that I fancy trying.

Glad you like him. Nope, I haven’t done anything else with him. I just saw some of the others on that site and thought “I could do that.”

I’m thinking about puting him on a shirt or something, just for my own use. There was a coworker who helped me develop him as we went along, and I thought he’d appreciate having him on something too, so who knows. Maybe I’ll come out with a bunch of them.
