I was wondering does anyone other than students enter these competitions and is it worth it?

Hi Tara, how’s the new host working? I’m moving to Media Temple with Johno’s help this week. How funny that we should both move at almost the same time!

Thank you for sharing that site, LoopPress (it seems that particular post got lost in the move!). Using WordPress as a CMS for a non-blog site is something I’ve been interested in too.

Hi Graham – I personally don’t enter competitions – no time, but the links always get a lot of hits so I am sure a lot of people do.

Hi Lauren – Good luck with your new host, I figure Hosgator have to have better customer service than 1and1. 1and1 seem to have reliable servers but support and flexibility are rubbish. I think the DNS may not have been completely resolved when you were looking for LoopPress post – hopefully its OK now.

Sometimes I’ll enter design competitions just to shake up an otherwise very conservative corporate design job. It helps me to sink my teeth into something creative that doesn’t have my salary hinging on it.

    Hi Joe

Sounds like a good idea if you have time. Have you won any – I know you did pretty well with your Mojizu character.

I’m jumping in pretty late in the game with this blog. I don’t enter the types of competitions where you’re designing something for someone else – i.e., a snowboard. However, I do enter design competitions on occasion like Graphis, GDUSA, MarCom, Communicator Awards… Is it worth it? Tough to say. I’ve found that management seems to like being able to say they have “award winning designers.” And it can help if you’re looking for a new job – looks good on a resume. Also, if you have to sell yourself to prospective clients, being able to show them your works is as good as the best in the country – or even world – can be a persuasive tool. Long winded answer. Maybe someone is still reading this… :)

    Hi, Tara

Curiosity got the best of me and I went to see your portfolio. Some great pieces. You’re a very talented designer.

Another reason to possibly enter competitions is that you can get your work printed in a design annual if you win. I don’t have a Web site that people can check, so it could come in handy knowing your designs are in some design annuals.

So, if you happen to have the 2006 Graphis Poster Annual, see if you can find my work! Also, the December 2007 Graphic Design USA Design Annual, or the 2007 Graphic Design USA In-House Design Annual. You might find my work in those publications.

Oh – another reason for entering competitions is to help boost morale. If I don’t feel my clients appreciate the work I do, then this sometimes helps knowing professionals across the country or world appreciate the good work I’m doing.

    Hi Allen

Thanks. I haven’t got any of those books otherwise curiousity would get the better of me too. :)
