@Thomas,

Don't know if you subscribe to the replies for this but you can get a rough idea of rates from this survey of UK freelancers http://cole007.net/blog/86/freelance-rates-survey-2011

My rates have increased but I'm also back in full time work with a friend these days so I freelance very little and I'm fortunate enough 3 years down the line to be able to pick and choose but it's interesting coming back and reading some of the stuff I said back then. Pretty much all of it I'd stand by now to be fair.

Hope that helps!

Just to echo the statement above, it is great to see a freelancer reveal just how much they're charging - though I suspect this figure will have increased exponentially since this post was first written. I don't suppose anyone knows of any resources where feeelancers have openly discussed what they charge? It's always been a particular bone of contention in the freelance world.

Great to see some actual prices on which I think is great, many people don't go into such detail and it can be hard for someone starting out new.

I completely agree with your point about planning a project, if a project is well planned both you and client understand the process, understands the quote leaving you with a free relaxing weekend!

Just found this blog....love this post also.

I just handed in my 2 week notice of resignation at my current 9-5...so this is very approporiate to read right now!

I have been freelancing properly for the past year outside of the full time job, and due to rapid growth, and support from some great clients, I am not able to work on my own FULL TIME, very similar to what James is doing.

I feel extremely liberated, excited and anxious all at the same time. I am trying to grow into a business, providing full design services..and with new clients coming to us every week, the future looks bright!

Great post, very interesting.

...people who want a champagne website on a beer budget.

I love that phrase...priceless.

Checked out the portfolio. Nice work. Especially like the Hannah site.

For those who decide to go freelance, it's important to know the people we'll be working with. For me, trust and gaining reputation is important too. You'll be all over the internet and people will know you and network with other people you've worked with. At least, you won't get negative feedbacks.
