I am curious to what fellow graphic designers do beyond graphic design. If you are anything like me, your creative brain does not switch off at the end of the day. It annoyingly sometimes wakes you up in the middle of the night with what seems like a fantastic idea (at the time anyway), I know my partner is not always so enthusiastic when I try and tell him about it at 2am in the morning.
I have my trustee notebook filled up with crazy ideas from the bizarre – a pogo stick bike (think I must have had a couple of glasses of wine when I thought of that one), and a fold up hoover with caterpillar wheels that could go down the stairs easily. I also have the more sensible ones – inkjet paper pre-sprayed with photomount/spraymount with a wax backing sheet so you don’t end up choking to death while mocking up visuals.I am just been waiting for an idea that requires a plastic prototype so I can try out polymorph (some plastic moulding material that you just warm up mould, leave to cool and it goes hard again), looks fun.And what about websites, do you get ideas for websites (graphic design blog included) all the time, and stories, oh and children’s characters and kitchen gadgets and…and…
Or maybe its just me?

Don’t give away all of your ideas!
You don’t want them to be taken by anyone else.
I get some ideas once in awhile but I never seem to have paper or a pencil laying around to jot them down, then of course I end up forgeting lol.
Hi Sean,
I am looking forward to seeing the pogo bike in the shops!
)
Better buy yourself a notebook, one of those ideas you forgot could have made you a fortune (one day eh
I always give away my ideas, because I know I’ll never do them myself (too busy). techquilashots.com operates on a similar idea from a business startup viewpoint – maybe a design take on that site would be interesting… now theres an idea!
Just checked out techquillashots site, cool idea. Interesting thought on doing a simlar design related website…hmmm…I wonder how that could work??
On a similar theme is idea-a-day.com
where people submit ideas and they display one a day.
Ha. It’s so true. Over the years, the only way I’ve been able to shut my brain off is through jogging/running. And I think that is mainly due to a tendency to want to be around other people and nature in general.
But I suspect-soon, there will be hand-held device with speech to text translation so I can continue to jot ideas down even while running.
Great blog.
Hi Marc,
Thanks for commenting and the compliment. I know what you mean about having to do something totally different to slow your brain down…you run..I find a walk in the countryside helps me switch off
I don’t invent new products, but I love page layout and in my spare time I like to scrapbook
I also want to take some classes on photography and sumi-e brush painting. I love learning new things.
I retreat from the rigors of designing by playing video games (Lord of the Rings Online is my newest time-waster) and taking walks or reading in the park. Backpacking is a really great way to get away from things, too. It’s so refreshing!
Hi Lauren
Learning photography sound a cool idea, both a good hobby and useful to your work too. I am going to have to have a look at some of this sumi-e painting too.
My boyfriend is theone for video games. I bought him a Nintendo Wii for his Birthday and he’s addicted to the tennis. I play the guitar (badly) to relax, I love it you can forget everything while your playing.
