For “a day in the graphic designer” Caitlyn of http://www.caitlynknepka.tumblr.com/ created a video that she posted on Youtube. Unfortunately I missed it as there was no live link on youtube. The video is shown below. If anyone else has created a video I am unaware of please let me know.
Caitlyn wins the $100 for her video entry.

I think im in love lol
I think this video is a really brave move, and just demonstrates how much work is involved when you graduate.
When i graduated i felt as though i had be built up and propelled into an industry, and i had no concept of what the next step was.
So its good that u tube has opened up a whole world of open knowledge which graduates can access and use to their advantage.
Hi Victoria
I know what you mean I don’t think colleges and uni’s prepare anyone for the real world – social media, blogs and youtube are a great way to get yourself seen on the web.
Thanks
Tara
Nice idea with the vid for “a day in the life of”..
A picture says more than 1000 words.. But a video says more than 10.000 pictures
Nice one
Schools don’t prepare designers for any of the realities of business. I own a small design and advertising firm in Phoenix and I see this every day. A business is looking for someone who can jump in and run with the ball. But in reality – I have to spend weeks training someone how not to do things.
The basics of file management to learning to avoid designing off a grid are really what separates those who will succeed.
One big thing – if you are in school now, or a recent graduate, please learn web design. Joomla, Word Press and HTML! And be fairly proficient in how it works, how to setup hosting, databases, etc. That is the primary thing I look for in designers these days. I can teach someone to design within the clients parameters, but knowing the systems is a real must!
Hi
I must admit I agree, on looking round my old college a couple of years ago hardly anything was web based and a lot of the students didn’t even have email or web addresses on their business cards.
